# St Peter, Greenhill

St Peter’s on Reney Avenue, Greenhill, Sheffield, is a Grade II circular church of 1964–65 by Oxley & Bussey, with Peter Sargent as architect in charge. It was built for a new housing estate then on the edge of the city and consecrated on 22 May 1965, when the parish still lay in the Diocese of Derby.

## Overview

Historic England lists a brick church on a circular plan with a central square spire 93 feet high clad in Westmorland slate. Four laminated timber beams rise from around the altar to form the spire, with a clear-glass clerestory. Advanced and recessed sections are joined by flat glass walls; a porch projects to the north-west and a day chapel to the north-east. The raised circular altar is of grey Derbyshire marble, with a stainless-steel and wood rail and a suspended steel cross. Seating is in arched sections; the font is a circular block of the same marble on an octagonal base. The listing of 1999 calls it an early example of liturgical planning that brings celebrant and people together, and ‘a most handsome and lavish church of its date’.

Plans for an Anglican church in Greenhill, then in the parish of Norton St James, date from the 1930s. Contractors were William Drabble & Sons. The parish is now in the Diocese of Sheffield and also serves Lowedges.
