# St Peter, Great Asby

St Peter’s in Great Asby, Cumbria, is a Grade II Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Carlisle, a Gothic Revival rebuild of 1866 on a medieval site.

## Overview

Historic England lists the Church of St Peter (NHLE 1144926, listed 12 April 1984) as a parish church of 1866, a Gothic Revival rebuild by Hay, in coursed sandstone with stepped buttressing and graduated slate roofs. A west bellcote sits on a pointed arch between buttresses. The three-bay nave has a south aisle; the porch soffit is inscribed with the architects’ names. Inside, cylindrical piers with foliate capitals carry a polychrome-stone south arcade; demi-angel corbels carry the chancel arch. The Church Heritage Record notes a church at Asby by about 1200, a building in poor repair by 1861, a foundation stone in 1865, and consecration by the Bishop of Carlisle on 27 September 1866. The contemporary lychgate is listed separately at Grade II. The church is part of the Heart of Eden benefice.
