# St Peter, Field Broughton

St Peter’s, Field Broughton, is a Grade II* Free Perpendicular church of 1892–94 by Paley, Austin and Paley of Lancaster, in the Diocese of Carlisle on the Cartmel peninsula.

## Overview

A chapel of ease to Cartmel Priory stood here from 1745. Field Broughton became a separate parish in 1875; the chapel was inadequate by 1880. The present church was designed by Paley, Austin and Paley. The foundation stone was laid on 10 May 1892 and Bishop John Bardsley of Carlisle consecrated the building on St Peter’s Day, 29 June 1894. The cost was between £7,500 and £8,000.

Historic England records dressed limestone with sandstone dressings, tile roofs and a shingled spire: nave, crossing tower and spire, transepts with west aisles, north vestry and chancel. Interior fittings include a Kempe east window of 1894, an alabaster reredos, and an organ by Forster and Andrews of Hull. Listed Grade II* on 25 March 1970 (NHLE 1349025); listing NGR SD3870581776. The parish is part of the Cartmel Peninsula Team Ministry.
