# St Peter, Dixton

The Church of St Peter at Dixton stands on the River Wye about a mile north-east of Monmouth, a Grade II* medieval church in Wales that remains in the Church of England Diocese of Hereford.

## Overview

Cadw records possible Celtic and Saxon origins (perhaps about 1080); the oldest visible fabric is herringbone masonry inside the north nave wall. Opposed north and south doors suggest a twelfth-century Norman nave. The chancel, including the priest’s door, is older than its Perpendicular windows and is comparable to other Monmouthshire chancels of about 1300. The tower is probably Norman, heightened and given a broach spire early in the fourteenth century. Restoration in 1824 added the vestry; J. Prichard and J. P. Seddon rebuilt the south nave wall and porch in 1861–2 and inserted red sandstone windows. Cadw listed the church at Grade II* on 27 June 1952 (record 2215) as one of Monmouth’s three medieval parish churches.

The church floods regularly; brass plates near the chancel arch record notable flood heights. Fittings include an early eighteenth-century communion rail, a tub font from the Chapel of St Michael, and Royal Arms dated 1711. A churchyard cross is separately listed and scheduled.
