# St Peter, Clyffe Pypard

St Peter’s on Wood Street, Clyffe Pypard, Wiltshire, is a Grade I parish church with a fifteenth-century nave and tower, restored by William Butterfield in 1860 and 1873–74, in the Diocese of Salisbury.

## Overview

There has been a church here since the thirteenth century. Historic England and local histories record a tall fifteenth-century nave of five bays, narrow aisles and a three-stage west tower in limestone ashlar and rubble, with a fifteenth-century nave roof of knee-braced collars and brattished cornice. Butterfield rebuilt the chancel and aisles in 1860 and oversaw further Goddard-family restoration in 1873–74, including chancel fittings. The hexagonal pulpit is dated 1629. Nikolaus Pevsner described the setting as ‘a lovely position below a wooded stretch of the cliff’; he and his wife Lola are buried in the churchyard. Listed on 17 January 1955 (NHLE 1022655). The benefice is now part of Woodhill with Broad Town, Hilmarton and Tockenham.
