# St Peter, Clearwell

St Peter’s on Church Street, Clearwell, in the Forest of Dean, is a Grade I French Gothic Revival church by John Middleton of Cheltenham, consecrated in 1866.

## Overview

Caroline, Dowager Countess of Dunraven of Clearwell Court, commissioned Middleton after her return in 1855 to replace an earlier chapel of ease (rebuilt 1829 by G. V. Maddox), now the cemetery mortuary chapel. The 1866 church has a south-west tower with broach spire, four-bay clerestoried nave, aisles, and a two-bay chancel, in snecked rubble sandstone with Bath stone dressings. Interior piers mix Bath stone and blue Forest stone with red sandstone mouldings. John Roddis of Birmingham carved the reredos and pulpit; Hardman supplied glass. The Countess brought an organ from Adare. The parish is in the Diocese of Gloucester.
