# St Peter, Blaxhall

St Peter’s is a Grade II* parish church on Church Road, Blaxhall, Suffolk, in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich and the Alde River Church benefice.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church with a fourteenth-century west tower and thirteenth-century nave, much restored in the mid-nineteenth century, especially the chancel. The four-stage tower is random flint with flushwork and stepped diagonal buttresses; the upper stages were repaired in red brick and the west doorway is now bricked up. Nave and chancel have rubble walls with cement render. The south porch is random flint with stone and flushwork buttresses. The nave has an early-sixteenth-century arch-braced hammerbeam roof with traceried spandrels. Fittings include an ogee-arched piscina, an alabaster monument to Francis Saunders (1621), and a fourteenth-century font with evangelist symbols on the stem. Twentieth-century work by the Rope sisters Ellen, Margaret and Dorothy includes the stained-glass east window and a figure of St George modelled on Michael Rope, who died in the R101 airship disaster. Suffolk Heritage Explorer also notes a fragment of twelfth-century carved stone in the west wall of the nave. The church is open from 9am to sunset daily.
