St Peter, Aldwincle

St Peter’s is a Grade I Church of England parish church on Main Street, Aldwincle, Northamptonshire, in the Diocese of Peterborough: the northern of the village’s two historic churches, with a limestone broach spire above an Early English nave.

Overview

Historic England lists a late twelfth-century church, mainly thirteenth-century, restored in the nineteenth century. The fabric is squared coursed limestone with an ashlar tower and spire and lead and Collyweston slate roofs. The plan is aisled nave, chancel, south porch, north vestry and west tower. The chancel has tall two-light windows; the west end has a five-light Perpendicular window. The interior has a three-bay arcade: the west pier of the north arcade is late twelfth-century, circular with a square abacus; the east pier is a quatrefoil of about 1300; the south arcade is thirteenth-century with circular piers and octagonal abaci. The chancel arch is double-chamfered.

Aldwincle once had two parishes. The villages of Aldwincle St Peter and Aldwincle All Saints were united in 1879; All Saints, at the south-east of the village, is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. There are no regular advertised opening times for St Peter.
