# St Paul, Widnes

St Paul’s is a Church of England church on Victoria Square, Widnes, designed by Henry Shelmerdine of Liverpool and consecrated by the Bishop of Liverpool.

## Overview

Architects of Greater Manchester, quoting Building News of 28 January 1887, record a cruciform church in the Early English style, faced with grey pressed bricks ornamented with terracotta, built at a cost of £8,000 and seating 750. The same notice states that the church was consecrated on a Tuesday by the Bishop of Liverpool. The practice’s date range for the new build is 1883–86. Pollard and Pevsner (Lancashire: South West) also treat the church, and ascribe a 1901 vicarage to Shelmerdine.

The church is not on the National Heritage List for England. It was built as a daughter church to St Mary, West Bank, during Widnes’s growth as a chemical town, on land given in the will of J. G. Leigh. Local accounts add that a tower and clock were attached in the early twentieth century.
