# St Paul, Shipley

St Paul’s is a Grade II Church of England parish church on Kirkgate, Shipley, West Yorkshire, a Commissioners’ church of 1823–26 by John Oates of Halifax, in the Diocese of Leeds.

## Overview

Shipley then lay in the parish of Bradford. A grant under the Church Building Act 1818 funded a new church; John Wilmer Field of Heaton gave the acre site. The foundation stone was laid on 5 November 1823 by the Revd Henry Heap, Vicar of Bradford. Oates designed a Perpendicular building with a five-bay nave and aisles under one roof, a small chancel, and a tall three-stage west tower with crocketed pinnacles. It was consecrated on 1 November 1826. Original seating was for 1,488, with a large free provision. Galleries on the north and south received traceried fronts in 1875; the west gallery was later screened to form a hall. The east window is by F. Barnett of York, 1858–60. The parish now includes part of Saltaire World Heritage Site.

Historic England listed the church Grade II on 24 June 1976 (list entry 1133546).
