# St Paul, North Sunderland

St Paul’s is a Grade II parish church on Main Street, North Sunderland, Northumberland, serving North Sunderland and Seahouses in the Diocese of Newcastle. It is an early church by Anthony Salvin.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of 1834 by Salvin: ashlar with a Welsh slate roof, a nave with bellcote and an apsidal chancel, in Romanesque style. The west door has columns with cushion capitals and a multi-moulded arch, flanked by one-light windows and a string course that rises over the openings. A round-headed window sits over the door between trapezoidal recesses with colonettes. The four-bay nave has one-light round-headed windows, a rising string course and bay buttresses. The chancel has a priest’s door with roll-moulded arch and cushion capitals, similar windows and a corbel table. A gabled double bellcote has roll-moulded arches and cushion capitals. Listing NGR is NU 21204 31453.

The interior has a canted, plastered barrel-vaulted nave ceiling and a round barrel-vaulted chancel. A screen and an elaborate octagonal pulpit of 1915 have twisted Ionic colonettes and figures of saints in niches. Parish history notes that the church is among Salvin’s earliest church works, built in 1833–34.
