# St Nicholas, Stretton

St Nicholas on Church Lane, Stretton, Rutland, is a Grade II* church of the twelfth to fourteenth centuries and the seventeenth century, restored in 1881 by James Fowler of Louth, in the Diocese of Peterborough.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of the twelfth to fourteenth centuries and the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, of coursed rubble stone and ashlar with a Collyweston slate roof and red ridge tiles. The plan has a nave with west bellcote (no tower), north aisle, north and south transepts, chancel and south porch. There is a fine thirteenth-century two-bay arcade with stiff-leaf capitals and a simple Norman south doorway in a thirteenth-century porch. The font is thirteenth-century; the altar rail is seventeenth-century. Listed Grade II* on 14 June 1954 (NHLE 1361819). Wikipedia records a major Victorian restoration by James Fowler of Louth in 1881, funded by the rector Edward Bradley (the writer Cuthbert Bede), who is buried in the churchyard. The legal parish is Stretton.
