Overview
Historic England lists the Church of St Nicholas (NHLE 1228501, listed 18 January 1968). The list and the Buildings of England note an outstanding collection of medieval and later stained glass and Cave family monuments. Chancel glass includes early-fourteenth-century apostle figures; later panels include the Virgin and St John of about 1500 and early-sixteenth-century south-aisle figures. The east window includes glass of about 1558 showing Cave family members with Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, brought from Stanford Hall. Monuments include a fourteenth-century priest’s effigy and a sequence of Cave tombs from Sir Thomas Cave (d. 1558) onward, with later work attributed to Westmacott and Mary Thornycroft, and some seventeen hatchments. An organ case of 1630, originally at Magdalen College, Oxford, is among the furnishings. The church stands by the deserted village and Stanford Hall, home of the Cave (Braye) family.
