St Nicholas, St Nicholas

St Nicholas is a Grade II Church in Wales parish church in the centre of the village of St Nicholas (Tremarchog), Pencaer, Pembrokeshire, in the Diocese of St Davids. Imported records sometimes confuse this church with St Nicholas-at-Wade in Kent; the D1 town and county are St Nicholas, Pembrokeshire.

Overview

Cadw lists a parish church of medieval origins, much restored in 1865 by R. K. Penson (reference 12990, designated 14 July 1993). The fabric is rubble stone with slate roofs: nave, chancel, north porch and south transept. The west wall is largely medieval, with a massive buttress under a bellcote; the 1865 bell-gable replaced a double bellcote. Windows have nineteenth-century stone Y-tracery. The south transept is medieval and has a plastered pointed barrel vault and a broad squint to the chancel.

Inside, Cadw records a five-bay nineteenth-century arch-braced collar-truss roof, a low plastered chancel arch, and three early inscribed stones on the east side of the chancel arch, including a memorial said to read ‘TUNCCETACE UXOR DARII HIC IACES’ and two stones of sixth- to seventh-century date. The font is medieval: a plain square bowl on a circular base. There are no monuments or stained glass in the Cadw description.
