# St Nicholas, Newbury

St Nicolas is a Grade I Church of England parish church on Bartholomew Street, Newbury, Berkshire, in the Diocese of Oxford. The listing name is Parish Church of St Nicolas.

## Overview

Historic England records a Perpendicular church of about 1509–1532, built largely at the expense of the clothier John Smallwood (alias Winchcombe, 'Jack of Newbury'). The plan is a five-bay nave and aisles, chancel with north and south chapels, a half-enclosed west tower, north and south porches, and a vestry of 1866. The fabric is Bath stone ashlar with buttresses, gargoyles and strings, and some chalk; roofs are lead and battlemented. The four-stage west tower has polygonal buttresses and a corbel dated 1532.

Extensive alterations of 1858 and 1866 include a chancel arch and roof by Henry Woodyer. The Perpendicular nave roof carries Smallwood's initials. Fittings noted in the listing include a carved pulpit of 1607 and brasses to John Smallwood and his wife (d. 1519) and to Griffiths Curteys (d. 1587). A church on the site is recorded from the late eleventh century.
