# St Nicholas, Moreton

St Nicholas is a Grade II* parish church at Moreton, Dorset, in the Diocese of Salisbury. Historic England records it as a good example of the early Gothic Revival, built in 1776 to replace a medieval church.

## Overview

The listing (as the Parish Church of SS Magnus the Martyr and Nicholas of Myra) describes Portland stone ashlar with roofs partly of stone slates and partly of lead: nave, apsidal sanctuary, north aisle, west porch, and a tower south of the nave with a former family pew to the east and vestry (once a servants' pew) to the west. The north aisle was added in 1841 and partly rebuilt after damage in the Second World War. Windows have intersecting Gothic tracery; those in the apse and north aisle are filled with engraved glass by Laurence Whistler. Wikipedia notes thirteen windows by Sir Laurence Whistler.

The dedication was changed in 1490 to St Nicholas, having previously been to St Magnus Martyr. Most fittings were renewed around 1847. Monuments include a 1762 memorial to Mary, wife of James Frampton, later Frampton family monuments, and a brass of 1523 to Jamys Frampton from the earlier church. Nave and apse have coved plaster ceilings with mock vaulting ribs. T. E. Lawrence is buried in the separate churchyard.
