# St Nicholas, Iford

St Nicholas is a Grade I parish church on The Street at Iford, East Sussex, in the Diocese of Chichester and the United Benefice of Iford with Kingston, Rodmell and Southease.

## Overview

Historic England describes a narrow church of chancel and nave with a tower between, surmounted by a shingled spire. The nave is early twelfth-century; the tower and chancel are late twelfth-century. A late twelfth-century north aisle has been demolished. The whole building was much restored in the nineteenth century. Wikipedia, following the listing and the Victoria County History, dates the foundation to 1090 and notes that the tower, supported by two high semicircular arches, was built above the original chancel. Three narrow east windows have rounded heads. Three blocked arches in the north wall of the nave mark the lost aisle.

Restoration in 1868 revealed the concealed north arcade and east windows; further work followed in 1874. Three bells of about 1426 invoke Saints Botulph, Katherine and Margaret and are among the oldest in Sussex. The church is open during daylight hours every day of the year.
