# St Nicholas, Godstone

St Nicholas is a Grade I parish church on Church Lane, Godstone, Surrey, in the Diocese of Southwark. It stands about half a mile from the present village, on the site of the older settlement of Wolcnested.

## Overview

Historic England dates the church to the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. A north aisle was added in 1845 and a south aisle in the restoration of 1872-73 by Sir G. G. Scott. Fabric is dressed stone with ashlar dressings, a timber porch, a plain tiled roof and a cedar-shingled tower and bellcote under a broach spire. The plan is an aisled nave with chancel and chancel chapels, a three-stage tower, south porch and north vestry.

The Diocese of Southwark notes Norman chevron stones reused in the rebuilt west doorway, an early thirteenth-century aisleless nave and chancel, and a later thirteenth-century tower base that still contains an original window and blocked doorway. Scott rebuilt the chancel, chancel arch and east window, raised the tower and reinstated the fifteenth-century font. The listing records a four-bay nave arcade, the Evelyn chapel with the chest tomb of Sir John and Dame Thomasine Evelyn (died 1641), and glass by Ward and Hughes of about 1865.
