# St Nicholas, Bromham

St Nicholas on the High Street, Bromham, Wiltshire, is a Grade I parish church of twelfth-century origin, mainly thirteenth to fifteenth century, with an ornate south-east chapel of 1492, in the Diocese of Salisbury.

## Overview

Historic England records an Anglican parish church with twelfth-century origins, thirteenth-, fourteenth- and fifteenth-century work, and a chancel rebuilt in 1865 by W. Slater. Materials are ashlar and ironstone rubble with stone slate roofs. The thirteenth-century crossing tower has a fifteenth-century bell-stage and recessed spire. The south-east chapel, built in 1492 for Sir R. Tocotes and Sir R. Beauchamp, is exceptionally ornamented, with a panelled painted roof and a series of tombs and brasses including the alabaster effigy of Sir R. Tocotes (d. 1457). A north vestry is probably of 1843 by G. P. Manners. The chancel has stencil decoration of 1865 and an east window of about 1870 by Burne-Jones for Morris & Co. Listed Grade I on 19 March 1962 (NHLE 1033887). The legal parish is Bromham, Chittoe and Sandy Lane.
