# St Nicholas, Bramber

The Parish Church of St Nicholas stands on The Street beside Bramber Castle, a Grade I Norman church founded about 1073 by William de Braose for a college of secular canons.

## Overview

De Braose established the college next to his new castle on the Adur; it was dissolved by about 1096 and the church became parochial by the mid-thirteenth century. The plan was originally cruciform; the transepts were later lost and the east tower now stands over the former crossing, which serves as the chancel. The listing records a largely Norman fabric of flint rubble and freestone, a hollow eighteenth-century tower and a twentieth-century west vestry. Rare early Norman sculpture survives on the chancel-arch capitals. The church was listed Grade I on 15 March 1955 (NHLE 1353947). It is in the Diocese of Chichester, in the united parish of Beeding and Bramber with Botolphs.
