Overview
Historic England lists the Church of St Nicholas as of 1380, in dressed flint with some ashlar flushwork and ashlar dressings. The listing covers the nave, aisles, transept and crossing of the original church, screened from the chancel by a fifteenth-century iron grille and a plate-glass partition, in Perpendicular Gothic forms. The Fitzalan Chapel is listed separately (1263812) as the aisleless collegiate chancel, founded as the Collegiate Church of the Holy Trinity and always separated from the nave; it is now the private mausoleum of the Dukes of Norfolk.
Wikipedia records that Richard FitzAlan, 4th Earl of Arundel, commissioned the collegiate church in 1380; the mason is believed to have been William Wynford. After the college was dissolved under Henry VIII the chapel remained with the family. The chapel was damaged in the 1643 siege of Arundel Castle. An 1879 judgment, Duke of Norfolk v Arbuthnot, confirmed that the chapel is not the parish chancel. The Anglican parish occupies the nave and transepts. The church is open daily.
