St Michael, East Anstey

St Michael’s is a Grade II* parish church on Broomball Lane, East Anstey, on the Devon–Somerset border, in the Diocese of Exeter and the Edgemoor Group of Parishes.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church with a fifteenth-century west tower and south porch, otherwise rebuilt in 1871 by Ashworth, in unrendered stone rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The two-stage tower has an embattled parapet, diagonal buttresses and a north-east stair turret, cusped two-light bell-openings and a Perpendicular three-light west window over a pointed doorway. A late Perpendicular straight-headed window survives to the left of the nineteenth-century south porch; other fenestration is nineteenth-century Perpendicular. The north side of the nave is blind.

The parish notes a church on the site since the twelfth century, though no Norman architecture remains. Interior fittings listed include an eighteenth-century pulpit and communion rails with barley-sugar balusters, a nineteenth-century font, arch-braced roofs and chancel arch, and a wall tablet by Kendall of Exeter to the Rev. John Bond (d. 1807). The church is kept open.
