St Michael, Wilsford

St Michael’s is a Grade II* parish church at Wilsford cum Lake in the Woodford Valley, Wiltshire, in the Diocese of Salisbury and the Parish of the Woodford Valley with Archers Gate.

Overview

Historic England records a twelfth-century church largely rebuilt in 1852 by T. H. Wyatt for Giles Loder. Fabric is strap-pointed flint with limestone dressings and tiled roofs; the twelfth-century tower work has greensand quoins. The plan is nave and chancel in one, with a north organ chamber, a timber-framed south porch by Weaver added in 1869, and a twelfth-century west tower. Some chevron and other twelfth-century carved stones are built into the walls. Widely spaced lancets and a sill string course mark the Victorian body; the east end has triple lancets.

The tower’s lower two stages are twelfth-century and unbuttressed, with a west door on nook shafts and cushion capitals. The upper stage was rebuilt, with a corbelled parapet and two-light openings under a pyramidal tiled roof. Inside, a twelfth-century tower arch has chamfered impost capitals. The parish history notes choir stalls, pews and communion rail from the nineteenth-century restoration, two probably seventeenth-century pews at the rear, and an octagonal limestone font.
