# St Michael, Whichford

St Michael’s is a Grade I parish church at Church End, Whichford, on the north Cotswolds, a medieval building of twelfth-century origin in the Diocese of Coventry.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of twelfth-century origins with thirteenth-, fourteenth- and fifteenth-century alterations and nineteenth-century restorations. The fabric is coursed and squared coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings; chancel and aisle roofs are stone-slate, the nave roof lead. The plan is chancel, nave with north aisle, and a fourteenth-century north-west tower. The twelfth-century chancel was enlarged in the thirteenth century and partly rebuilt in the fourteenth. A thirteenth-century north aisle, fourteenth-century south chapel and porch, and fifteenth-century clerestory complete the outline. The south porch retains a twelfth-century round-headed doorway with tympanum and chevron, billet and checker ornament on shafts with carved capitals.

Inside are a thirteenth-century north arcade, a fourteenth-century octagonal font, the alabaster-topped tomb of rector John Merton (d. 1537), and the chest tomb and brass of rector Nicholas Asheton (d. 1582). Fourteenth-century glass survives in the chancel east-window tracery (Crucifixion with angels) and in Mohun heraldry; fifteenth-century glass remains in the chapel east window. The church is in the South Warwickshire Seven Churches group.
