Overview
Historic England dates the church to the late fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. Henry Goddard designed the chancel and south aisle of 1842; the south aisle was extended as an organ chamber in 1882; W. Bassett Smith added the north aisle and vestry in 1888; the south porch is of 1910. Fabric is random granite rubble and dressed stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The plan includes a four-stage west tower with set-back octagonal spire, nave with clerestory, aisles, vestry, chancel and porches.
The tower has clasping buttresses, lucarnes, a restored west window with geometrical tracery and fourteenth-century-style bell openings. A reset Romanesque tympanum over the vestry door, removed when the south aisle was added, shows a bishop, a lion and a dove. Fittings include a thirteenth-century hewn oak chest about two and a half metres long, an octagonal painted ashlar font with an eighteenth-century cover, and George III Royal Arms. The tower has eight bells; a peal of 12,896 changes of Cambridge Surprise Major was rung here on 28 April 1923.
