St Michael, Pleasley

St Michael is a Grade II* parish church on Church Lane in Pleasley, Derbyshire, in the Diocese of Derby, close to the River Meden.

Overview

Historic England records a parish church of the twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth and nineteenth centuries, of coursed squared sandstone with sandstone dressings and Welsh slate roofs with stone coped gables. The plan is a west tower, nave with south porch, and chancel with north vestry. The tower has a moulded plinth, diagonal buttresses, two unequal stages, a blocked four-centred west doorway and a four-centred three-light west window, two-light bell-openings, gargoyles, battlements and four crocketed pinnacles.

The interior retains a twelfth-century chancel arch with a double billet frieze on the label and two roll mouldings, and a twelfth-century font with figures carved in relief. A second font under the tower is a plain octagonal bowl dated 1662. The listing notes a Jacobean-style pulpit from Derby Cathedral, mid-Victorian stained glass in the east window, and a nineteenth-century south window internally shafted and panelled to form a sedilia. Roofs are nineteenth century.
