# St Michael, Penbryn

St Michael’s Church stands in a circular hillside churchyard west of the Hoffnant valley, about half a kilometre inland from Penbryn beach in Ceredigion. It is Grade I listed for an outstanding medieval roof.

## Overview

The Church in Wales regards the building as of twelfth-century origin on an earlier Christian site, among the oldest churches in the Diocese of St Davids. The porch is probably early seventeenth century; windows were inserted in the early nineteenth century and altered in an 1887 restoration by D. Davies of Penrhiwllan. A further restoration of 1957 is associated with A. D. R. Caroe. The interior is whitewashed, with slate floors, a medieval square font, and a thirteenth-century piscina. Cadw grades the church I for the fifteenth-century roof, one of only two of its type in south-west Wales (the other at Mwnt). The novelist Allen Raine is buried in the churchyard.
