# St Michael, Kirby le Soken

St Michael’s is a Grade II* parish church on The Street, Kirby-le-Soken, Essex, in the Diocese of Chelmsford.

## Overview

Historic England lists a fourteenth- and fifteenth-century parish church, restored about 1833 and mainly rebuilt about 1870 by Henry Stone, retaining a fifteenth-century west tower. The fabric is stone, flint and septaria with stone dressings and plain red tiled roofs. The plan is chancel, nave, north and south aisles, vestry and a large three-stage west tower with diagonal buttresses, flint-flushwork crenellations, a quatrefoil plinth frieze of shields, and a raised octagonal stair turret to the south-east. A gabled north porch has a moulded two-centred doorway with double shafts. The interior has a probably fourteenth-century double piscina in the chancel, three-bay north and south arcades with alternate circular and octagonal columns and ball-flower decoration to the arches, a seven-cant nave roof on stone corbels, and a chamfered tower arch. The church is normally open in daylight hours.
