Overview
Cadw records an Anglican church of 1833 by Clinton, builders D. and W. Lewis, costing £500, on a site near a 1623 chapel of ease built by John Lloyd of Ynyshir for Llanfihangel Genau’r Glyn. A five-sided chancel was added in 1913, probably by G. T. Bassett. The aisleless nave is simple Tudor Gothic in slaty stone with a west bellcote and porch, retaining a late-Georgian ‘preaching box’ interior: west gallery, box pews, and commandment boards of about 1833. The poet R. S. Thomas was vicar from 1954 to 1967; he had the woodwork painted black, introduced iron coronae by Alan Knight, and removed most memorials. Thomas Love Peacock married Jane Gruffudd here in 1819. Cadw listed the church at Grade II* on 17 February 1997 (reference 18242) as a scarce early-nineteenth-century church retaining late-Georgian character, and for its literary associations.
