# St Michael, Cambridge

St Michael’s on Trinity Street, Cambridge, is a Grade I Decorated parish church rebuilt in the late 1320s for Hervey de Stanton’s Michaelhouse, now in the parish of St Mary the Great with St Michael, in the Diocese of Ely.

## Overview

A church stood here by the twelfth century. In 1323 Stanton acquired it for Michaelhouse, a precursor of Trinity College; the present building was wholly rebuilt in the late 1320s, with a choir larger than the nave to serve both college and parish. After 1546 it passed to Trinity College and remained a parish church. Historic England records restorations after a fire by Sir George Gilbert Scott (1849–50), who rebuilt the north porch, and refurnishing of the chancel in 1868–74 by George Gilbert Scott Jr. The parish was united with Great St Mary’s in 1908; the church was later used mainly as a hall and converted to a multi-use space completed in 2002.
