Overview
A church is recorded on the site from 1140. Historic England lists the present building as sixteenth century with later alterations, restored and given a north transept in 1874 by Anthony Salvin. Walls are coursed squared rubble with an embattled parapet; roofs are graduated slate. The four-bay nave has a west bellcote and a sanctus bell; the chancel has a corbie-stepped gable. A south porch has a pointed outer door and a semicircular-headed inner door; a blocked ‘devil door’ remains on the north.
The interior has a king-post roof and pointed arches to the chancel and north chapel. Fonts include a seventeenth-century sandstone bowl and an octagonal stone font of 1860. The church holds many Pennington family memorials. Late-nineteenth-century chancel glass includes work by Morris & Co. to Henry Holiday’s designs. An Anglo-Norse high cross stands in the churchyard. The church is open daily and is not owned by the castle estate.
