# St Michael & All Angels, Mottram in Longdendale

St Michael and All Angels stands on Warhill above Mottram in Longdendale, a Grade II* Perpendicular church in the Diocese of Chester whose tower dominates the Longdendale skyline.

## Overview

Historic England records a fifteenth-century church with a tower of about 1486; the interior, vestry and clerestory are by E. H. Shellard, 1854. The fabric is hammer-dressed stone with an ashlar clerestory and a graduated stone-slate roof. The plan comprises a nave with aisles, aisle chapels, south porch and west tower, plus chancel and north vestry, in Perpendicular style. The six-bay aisle has a weathered plinth and castellated parapet; each bay has a weathered buttress and a stepped three-light window. The four-stage tower has angled weathered buttresses, a castellated parapet with crocketed corner finials, a three-light west window, a clock face and two-light belfry openings. The two-bay chancel has a five-light transomed Perpendicular-style east window.

The interior has a nave arcade on octagonal columns, a braced tie-beam nave roof, a High Victorian alabaster pulpit by H. Hems (1885), a chandelier of 1755 and a barrel-shaped stone font. The Staveleigh chapel holds two early-fifteenth-century recumbent stone effigies; there is also a monument to Reginald Bretland (1703). The church is open daily.
