St Michael & All Angels, Martin Hussingtree

St Michael and All Angels is a Grade I parish church in Martin Hussingtree, Worcestershire, in the Diocese of Worcester and the parish of Salwarpe and Hindlip with Martin Hussingtree.

Overview

Historic England records twelfth-century origins, an early thirteenth-century rebuild, repairs in the early fifteenth and early seventeenth centuries, restoration in 1868 and enlargement in 1883. The fabric is coursed sandstone rubble with some ashlar refacing, a plain tiled roof, and a timber-framed bell turret with a shingled pyramidal roof. The plan is a continuous nave and chancel of about five bays, a three-bay south aisle of 1883, a north porch, and the west bell turret.

The west wall is probably twelfth-century masonry, with a widened round-headed window and two gable loopholes. A projecting semicircular date stone of 1625 in the east gable records repairs of that time. The early fifteenth-century north porch is timber-framed on a rubble plinth. The interior has a three-bay wooden arcade to the south aisle and late nineteenth-century wagon roofs. Thomas Tomkins was buried in the churchyard on 9 June 1656.
