# St Michael & All Angels, Lyndhurst

St Michael and All Angels is a Grade I Victorian Gothic parish church on the High Street, Lyndhurst, in the New Forest, Hampshire. It stands in the Diocese of Winchester and the parish of Lyndhurst and Emery Down and Minstead.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church of 1858–68 by William White, with interior features by Pre-Raphaelite artists. Fabric is polychromatic brick in two shades of red, yellow and white, with stone dressings and a plain tile roof. The style is loosely Early English Geometric. The plan comprises a sanctuary and two-bay chancel, a five-bay nave with tall transepts and lean-to aisles with gabled dormers to the clerestory, a north porch, and a three-stage north-west tower with spire. The listing calls the exterior White’s masterpiece and the interior magnificent: brickwork is left exposed in polychrome patterns, and nave arcades rest on piers of eight Purbeck shafts with foliage capitals by G. W. Seale, who also carved the pulpit and timber screen.

Glass includes work by Edward Burne-Jones at the east end, Morris & Co. in the south transept (1862), Clayton and Bell in the north transept, and C. E. Kempe (1903) at the west. A fresco on the reredos of 1864 is by Lord Leighton; south-wall paintings of about 1860 are by J. H. Pollen. A monument of 1863 to Mr and Mrs Hargreaves, who had the church built, is by G. E. Street. The parish history notes a predecessor Georgian church of 1741, replaced because it was too small, and a construction cost of about £9,000, including £300 from Queen Victoria.
