St Michael & All Angels, Llantarnam

St Michael and All Angels is a Grade II* Church in Wales parish church in a churchyard on the south-east side of Newport Road, Llantarnam, in the Diocese of Monmouth.

Overview

Cadw records a medieval Anglican parish church with mostly fifteenth-century surviving details and a fifteenth- to sixteenth-century west tower. The nave may be of twelfth- or thirteenth-century origin (a blocked small north window). Chancel and north-east memorial chapel were much altered in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries; the chapel arcade to the chancel may be later sixteenth-century and contemporary with an alabaster memorial to a member of the Morgan family of Pentrebach and Llantarnam Abbey. The church was restored in 1869–70 by E A Lansdowne, who replaced the roofs and added the porch, and in 1921 by Sir Harold Brakspear, who stripped plaster from the walls.

Cadw grades the church II* as a medieval church with a fine Tudor west tower and sixteenth-century chancel arcade. The Catholic priest David Lewis, later canonised, was arrested in a cottage opposite the church. The churchyard includes the grave of John Fielding VC (d. 1932), who won the Victoria Cross at Rorke's Drift.
