# St Michael & All Angels, Llanfihangel y Creuddyn

St Michael’s is a Grade II* Church in Wales parish church in the centre of Llanfihangel y Creuddyn, Ceredigion, a largely unaltered medieval cruciform church with a central tower, in the Diocese of St Davids.

## Overview

Cadw lists a medieval church of the fourteenth to fifteenth centuries with fine surviving fifteenth-century roofs, first noted in 1254 as Llanfihangel Gelynrhud. The plan is cruciform, with a large square crossing tower, relatively low nave, chancel and transepts, a south porch and a north-east vestry. Walls are rubble stone with slate eaves roofs. Windows are generally plain square-headed two-light mullions in red sandstone. The tower is tall and plain, with vent loops, cambered-headed bell-openings and an embattled parapet; a short octagonal nineteenth-century spire has fishscale slating.

Repairs of 1835 are said to have lowered the crossing tower by six feet, though a fifteenth-century bell frame remains. The north transept was rebuilt in 1846. R. K. Penson estimated restoration at £910 in 1870; work appears finished by 1874, when A. K. Ritchie signed the completion form. W. D. Caröe repaired the roofs in 1931. The interior is plastered, with fifteenth-century oak panelled roofs to nave, transepts and chancel. Most fittings are of 1870–74 by Penson. A carved oak reredos of 1919 by Jules Bernaerts depicts the Last Supper. Coflein calls it the best of three surviving cruciform churches with central towers in Ceredigion.
