# St Michael & All Angels, Haworth

St Michael and All Angels is the Grade II* parish church of Haworth, West Yorkshire, on Church Street in the Diocese of Leeds. The present building is the third church on the site and is closely tied to the Bronte family, who lived at the neighbouring parsonage.

## Overview

Historic England records the base of the south-west tower as probably sixteenth-century, with the upper stages eighteenth-century, and the rest of the church rebuilt in 1879 in a late thirteenth- or early fourteenth-century style by T. H. and F. Healey of Bradford. The fabric is coursed, dressed millstone grit under a graduated Westmorland slate roof. The plan is an aisled six-bay nave with embattled Perpendicular tower and south porch, and a lower three-bay chancel with southern chapel and north organ chamber. The interior has a pointed-arch arcade on octagonal piers, a marble pulpit, and elaborate late-Gothic altar rails.

Wikipedia and the listing note that John Wesley preached in the eighteenth-century church and that Patrick Bronte was incumbent from 1820 to 1861. The 1879–81 rebuild, the third church on the site, caused contemporary protest because Haworth had already become a literary destination. Parts of the medieval tower survive. The church remains an active parish church and a major visitor site beside the former parsonage.
