Overview
The listing describes a Presbyterian chapel of about 1650, reputedly built for Sir Edward Rhodes (Rodes) of Great Houghton Hall, later a Church of England chapel of ease. It is ashlar sandstone, weathered and part rendered, with nave and chancel under one roof, a west porch, and a twentieth-century addition. Round-headed three-light transomed windows sit under a parapet of round-headed merlons; the west gable has an ashlar bellcote. The interior keeps seventeenth-century king-post trusses, two rows of box pews with acorn finials, and a carved octagonal pulpit with sounding board.
Rodes was a Parliamentarian High Sheriff of Yorkshire. In 1908 the Earl of Crewe conveyed the building to the Church of England as Houghton Magna chapel of ease to Darfield. Because no earlier dedication was recorded, the Assistant Bishop of Sheffield dedicated it to St Michael and All Angels on 17 December 1960. Choir stalls by Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson and glass by W. T. Camm are later furnishings reported by the parish.
