# St Michael & All Angels, Barton Turf

St Michael and All Angels is a Grade I parish church on Church Road, Barton Turf, Norfolk, standing about a kilometre south-west of the village, in the Diocese of Norwich.

## Overview

Historic England records a fourteenth-century nave and aisles, a fifteenth-century west tower, aisles and chancel remodelled in the fifteenth century (a bequest of 1494), and a south chancel chapel of 1440–45. The church was restored in 1890 and 1934. The fabric is flint with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The three-stage tower has flushwork diagonal buttresses, a crenellated flushwork parapet and square ringing-chamber panels of cusped four-petal tracery. A two-storey fifteenth-century north porch of knapped flint has a tierceron vault with carved bosses.

The church is best known for its c.1440 chancel screen, coved to the west with a skeleton vault. The listing describes painted dado panels of court quality: on the north, St Apollonia, St Citha (Osyth), St Raphael, St Gabriel, Dominations and Seraphim; on the south, Cherubim, Principalities, Thrones, Archangels, Angels and St Barbara. A further screen to the south chapel shows St Edmund, Edward the Confessor, St Olave and Henry VI. There is an early-fourteenth-century octagonal font and brasses of the mid and late fifteenth century.
