# St Michael & All Angels, Ashton under Lyne

St Michael and All Angels is a Grade I parish church on Stamford Street and Church Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, in the Diocese of Manchester.

## Overview

Historic England records that the fifteenth-century church was virtually rebuilt in the nineteenth century: the north side in 1821, the nave and south side in 1840–44, the east wall of the chancel in 1883, and the west tower in 1886–88 by Crowther, with a north porch of about 1920. The facing is ashlar; nineteenth-century gritstone conceals parts of the medieval red sandstone walls. The style is Victorian Gothic, largely Perpendicular, with a five-bay nave, three-bay chancel and an imposing four-stage west tower with crocketed pinnacles. A three-sided gallery is housed within the aisles. The interior arrangement is unusual: seating faces west toward a three-decker pulpit against the north arcade, and the chancel is marked mainly by the chancel arch with the royal coat of arms. A church on the site is recorded from the thirteenth century and a church at Ashton is mentioned in Domesday.
