# St Matthew and St Luke, Chadderton

St Matthew’s, now the parish church of St Matthew and St Luke, stands on Chadderton Hall Road, Chadderton, Greater Manchester, in the Diocese of Manchester. It is listed Grade II.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1848–57 by E. H. Shellard in hammer-dressed stone with a slate roof. The plan is nave and chancel with a south-west tower added about 1878 and later flat-roofed additions to west and north. The four-bay nave has gableted buttresses and two-light windows with reticulated tracery; the two-bay chancel has cusped lancets. The three-stage tower has clasping buttresses, an arched door and a squat spire behind corner pinnacles, with gabled two-light belfry openings.

The interior has a west gallery on cast-iron columns, arch-braced collar-tie roof trusses on carved corbels, a wagon roof to the chancel, timber fittings and a stone font. Stained glass includes work by Kempe and Tower and by F. Comere and Capronnier. Wikipedia records that the parish was formed in 1844, a wooden chapel of 1845 served until the stone church was completed and consecrated in 1857. St Luke’s on Buckley Street later joined the parish; the listed building on Chadderton Hall Road is St Matthew’s.
