Overview
Historic England records a parish church and attached railing of 1854–55 by Flockton & Son, with a chancel of 1884 by J. D. Sedding and redecoration of about 1960 by G. G. Pace. The fabric is coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The plan comprises chancel and sanctuary, vestry and organ chamber, nave with clerestory, aisles with lady chapel and baptistry, and a west tower with spire. Windows are mainly segmental-pointed with panel tracery; the chancel east gable has a five-light window. The west tower’s lower stage forms the west front, with a moulded doorway, crenellated parapet and a war-memorial Calvary; an octagonal bell stage carries a plain set-back octagonal spire.
Inside, nave and chancel have queen-post truss roofs on wooden wall shafts. Five-bay nave arcades have plain octagonal piers. The sanctuary has a moulded alabaster screen wall and a wrought-iron gate; a wrought-iron screen also closes the lady chapel. The parish stands in the Anglo-Catholic tradition and receives alternative episcopal oversight from the Bishop of Beverley. Daily worship is offered in the city-centre church.
