# St Matthew, Northowram

St Matthew’s is a Grade II parish church on Back Clough, Northowram, Calderdale, designed in 1911 by the Halifax firm of Joseph Walsh and Graham Nicholas.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of 1911 in snecked local sandstone with a graded stone-slate roof. The plan is an aisled nave with south porch, transepts, and a chancel with south chapel, north vestry and a link to a north-east tower. Geograph notes that the almost detached bell tower occupies part of a former quarry site; before this church was built the village was in Coley parish.

The listing describes a spacious interior with simple arcades and an arched-brace nave roof. Principal fittings include an octagonal font carved as a single piece, pews with linenfold ends, sanctuary panelling, and a reredos of 1913 by H. P. Jackson of Northowram with niches of archangels. Part of a former chancel screen by C. H. Stevens (1938) remains. The west end was re-ordered in the 1990s for non-liturgical use. The church is in the Diocese of Leeds.
