# St Matthew, Boughton

St Matthew’s is a Grade II parish church on Church Road, Boughton, Nottinghamshire, in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and the parish of Ollerton with Boughton. The D1 title uses Boughton; the slug retains an older Broughton spelling.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of 1868 by J. Fowler of Louth in thirteenth-century Gothic Revival style, in snecked ashlar and brick with ashlar dressings and a slate roof. The plan is south-west tower, aisleless nave, chancel, vestry and south porch. The two-stage buttressed tower has a broach spire with four tiers of lucarnes and Geometrical bell openings. Windows are mainly double Geometrical lancets. The brick interior has cogged and blue-brick bands; the chancel arch is polychrome brick with marble shafts.

Southwell and Nottingham Church History Project records that Boughton became an independent perpetual curacy in 1866. W. J. Pickin laid the foundation stone on 19 September 1867 and the Bishop of Lincoln consecrated the church on 15 September 1868. It replaced a dilapidated earlier church to the south. The new building used Steetley stone with yellow Ancaster ashlar facings, on land given by the Hon. and Rev. J. L. Saville.
