# St Mary, Wombwell

St Mary's is a Grade II parish church on Church Street (listed on Hough Lane), Wombwell, South Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Sheffield. The parish was created from Darfield.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1896-1914 in several builds by Hadfield and Garland of Sheffield, in Perpendicular Gothic Revival. Fabric is deeply coursed dressed sandstone with contrasting limestone and sandstone dressings and a tile roof. The plan, described in ritual orientation, is a west tower with north porch, six-bay aisled nave, three-bay chancel with south vestry and two-storey north organ chamber.

The parish history states that Viscount Halifax laid the foundation stone on 21 December 1896. The nave was consecrated on 21 April 1898, the chancel on 1 February 1908, and the tower and porch on 31 May 1914, on the first visit of the new Bishop of Sheffield. The listing notes a twelfth-century scalloped capital reset in the nave west wall and a fifteenth-century piscina in the chancel, remains of the earlier medieval church. A simple pinnacled tower parapet was added about 1960; a ring of eight bells was cast in 1961. The church seats about 800. Internal reordering in the early 1990s moved the altar to the west end.
