# St Mary, West Bank

St Mary’s in the West Bank area of Widnes is a Grade II* Church of England parish church in the Diocese of Liverpool, a landmark beside the lower Mersey and the Runcorn–Widnes crossing.

## Overview

Historic England lists the Church of St Mary (NHLE 1130420, listed 31 October 1983). The list describes a parish church of 1908–10 by Austin and Paley: red sandstone, red tiles to the main roof and lead to the aisles, a west tower embraced by aisles, five-bay nave, transepts and chancel in Perpendicular style. The square tower has a full-height octagonal stair at the south-east. Interior features include massive octagonal columns under an eight-ribbed tower vault, a longer south-transept Lady Chapel, and a collar-truss main roof. Construction began in 1908; the church was consecrated in November 1910. It has been called the last great church masterpiece of Austin and Paley. The building has appeared on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register, with tower and north roofs already repaired and south roofs still needing work.
