Overview
Historic England dates a late thirteenth-century tower arch, the east of the nave and the west of the chancel; fourteenth-century clerestory, arcades, aisles and chancel extension; a fifteenth-century rood screen and rebuilt tower; an eighteenth-century brick porch; and restorations in the early twentieth century and about 1980. The plan is west tower, four-bay aisled nave with south porch, and three-bay chancel. Materials are limestone cobble and ashlar, with a brick porch.
The five-light east window can be dated to 1358 by a will leaving money for it. The outstanding interior feature is a mutilated priest’s tomb of about 1340–50 in the south aisle, attributed to the Beverley workshop of the Percy tomb, thought to commemorate William de la Mare, Provost of Beverley, or his brother Thomas, vicar of Welwick. The five-bay oak screen is Perpendicular, restored by John Bilson in 1906; the pulpit is dated 1618. The church was listed Grade I on 16 December 1966 (NHLE 1366256).
