Overview
Historic England lists a redundant parish church of 1843 and 1855 by George Rowe or Moore, in sandstone ashlar with Welsh slate roofs and an ashlar broach spire. Goodhart-Rendel dates the work to 1843 and 1855 and attributes it to George Moore; the listing records a brass to Rector R. L. Freer, who beautified the church and built the spire. The plan is unusual: a western polygonal chancel, three-bay nave, one-bay transepts with west porches, and an east tower with the main entry. Listing NGR is SO 40589 46575.
The interior is richly fitted. The listing describes a painted chancel dado with rampant lions (probably Price family symbols), metal plaques of the Magnificat, Creed, Commandments, Lord’s Prayer and Nunc Dimittis, Warrington glass of about 1845 in the apse, a fifteenth-century octagonal font, and Price monuments brought from the old church of St John the Baptist in 1853. A marble plaque to Uvedale Price records that he began the new church because the ancient parish church was dilapidated, and died in 1854 before the work was finished. The ruins of that earlier church stand across the road.
