# St Mary the Virgin, Stamfordham

St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I parish church on The Green, Stamfordham, Northumberland, in the Diocese of Newcastle.

## Overview

Historic England records possible Saxon quoins at the west end of the nave and a blocked Saxon or early Romanesque arch in the west wall of the tower. Elsewhere the church is thirteenth-century, extensively restored in 1847 by Benjamin Ferrey. The fabric is squared stone and ashlar under a fish-scale tile roof. The plan comprises a three-storey west tower, a four-bay nave with aisles, a three-bay chancel and a north vestry with a tall octagonal chimney. The east end has three stepped lancets. Interior features include medieval grave covers in the porch, a trefoiled piscina, segmental niches with a knight’s effigy and a priest’s effigy with dogtooth, and a large 1653 monument to John Swinburne in the north aisle. Arcade arches are original though re-cut; the octagonal piers are replacements.
