# St Mary the Virgin, Southwick

St Mary is a Grade II* parish church on Main Street, Southwick, Northamptonshire, next to Southwick Hall, in the Diocese of Peterborough and the Warmington Benefice. Historic England dates the west tower to the fourteenth century; the chancel and nave were rebuilt in 1760 for George Lynn and remodelled about 1864.

## Overview

The listing describes limestone ashlar with lead and Collyweston slate roofs: a three-stage west tower with a crocketed octagonal spire and two tiers of lucarnes, a nave and a chancel. The tower has large angle buttresses, a nineteenth-century west window with Knyvet and Basset shields, and fourteenth-century bell openings. Interior arches to chancel and tower are fourteenth-century, triple-chamfered, with octagonal responds. The tower has vaulting ribs.

Fittings include reset seventeenth-century chancel panelling, an eighteenth-century communion rail and pulpit, and a mid-nineteenth-century chamber organ from Southwick Hall. The north chancel recess holds the monument of George Lynn (d. 1758), attributed to Roubiliac: grey and white marble with a medallion portrait and a seated female figure. The Warmington Benefice notes a village tradition that the Knyvetts began a church here around 1230.
